Re: in my garden.......

Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi everyone. This is my first year gardening and square foot
gardening. I have a couple of questions. I planted two heirloom
tomatoes this year. We only have two 4x4 12"raised beds.
I started them early in water walls. They are doing fine and set
fruit fairly early. The fruit that has been set is growing well.
But, now I see that all the blossoms that are developing are being
eaten off the vines. Each tiny little yellow blossom is gone in a day
or two. We don't have much in the way of pestilence here but I have
noticed a few tiny green grasshoppers around the garden area. Not
specifically on the vines, though. Could they be the culprits? And
what might one do? I garden organically. I thought it might a
hornworm but all the leaves are intact.

There was some talk just recently about what to place in empty squares
as the earlier crops are done. I got a late start this year and MOST
of my squares are pooping out. Anyone got more ideas of what to put
in the squares? My peas are done (bless their hearts, it is so hot
here, I don't know how they made it this long), my spinach is done (by
the way, I tried a Ruby Orach spinach which is heat resistant and it
was wonderful), my lettuce is done, etc. I will have alot of empty
squares. I think the thing to do, which I didn't, was to start more
crops indoors a month or so ago. We "maybe" have 60-70 days left in
our season unless it gets cold earlier. I am thinking about planting
more flowers.

One more question--things seemed to go very well at the beginning of
the season up until about a week ago. Tho some of the earlier crops
are done, the crops that should be growing well have stopped. We have
had very, very hot weather here (for Colorado)--in the 90's almost
every day now. Do I need more water? More fertilizer?

PS--I tried to send a picture of one of my raised beds to this
list--we'll see if it works. I really liked Charlie's photos--how
beautiful. I have many photos but don't have them on ememories.
