Re: what do you make your raised beds from?
Hi Jeanie,
If you already have the pressure treated wood use it.
It seems too much of the input now days is negative
and totally forestalls cost/effort effective
production. We have lost a great deal of the plain old
common sense that used to be a necessity to survive
and now rely on sensationalistic reports to govern our
actions. I use it (because I have piles of treated
ties) with no bad results. My solution was to get a
plant friendly asphalt type brush on ingredient, such
as used in grow troughs, and put it on as thickly as
it would support and line the inside with thin plywood
which I also coated to double the effect. Inquiring at
some building supply stores may get results or even an
ag supply.
This served the additional job of preventing soil and
water from coming out through the cracks.
I did not pursue this without thorough testing and
observation. I planted the same crops of lettuce,
radishes, etc. for two years and observed the neighbor
lady steal most of them. I am sure she ate them and
has survived in great shape. She can outrun a pretty
large dog and jump a two foot divider and never drop a
cucumber.
I see no reason not to use it if common sense is
applied. People used it in direct contact with the
soil for years and their were no large rushes to buy
burial plots just after harvest time.
Good luck
