Re: A couple of questions

Hello Cheryl

1. I think that the most likely thing wrong with yourcucumbers is that
they are not recieving enough moisture. Are you giving them sufficient
water ? To grow cucumbers sucessfully the atmosphere around the plants
should be very humid. This can be achieved by growing them in an enclosed
area i.e. a greenhouse - partly shaded - and mist spraying them regularly
in hot weather. If you wear glasses you can tell if the humidity is about
right because they will steam up.

2. If the problem is a mould of some type spray with a systemic fungicide
which contains carbendizim, However take a closer look to see if you can
see any little tiny red insects - You might have Red Spider Mite. These can
be dificult to irradicate but using a good contact insecticide might help.

3. We call Zuchini Courgettes over here. If they are what I think they are
you should harvest the fruit when they are no longer than 3 incheslong. If
your Zuchinis are what we call marrows they are ready for harvest when they
sound hollow when you tap them.

4. In our hot summer months we sow Sweet corn, Dwarf French Beans, Runner
Bearns, Lettuce - if you can provide some sort off shade, at the moment we
are planting out winter cabbage, leeks and making more sowings of carrots,
turnips and beetroot. If the sun is quite strong remember to keep the sown
area moist and try watering the drills before you sow.
