This has worked for me for broccoli: cut both ends off an aluminum drink
can and bury it in the center of a square foot, putting your seed (or
seedling) right in the center.  Leave about a cm. (half inch) above the
surface.  The stem of the broccoli will not quite expand to fill the space
in the can if you use one of the smaller varieties.
