off chiggers?

That doesn't sound like chiggers. Those little 'redbugs' like to be in 
close quarters. around the elastic waistband of your undies, top of your 
sock line, etc.
That sounds a lot like buffalo gnats to me.
Can't really see the little gnats well, until you've been bitten. They do 
affect your lymph system, especially if you've been bitten around the head 
and throat. Not much you can do about them except the guys who work 
outdoors all summer around here swear by Avon's Skin So Soft. They dilute 
it with water a little to tone down the 'ladylike' smell.
Also I've been seeing TV commercials that compare an Off skin spray to SOS 
for bug repellant qualities.
And you're not a baby for asking!  I've seen grown men cringe when they had 
to crawl up an ele pole, or get in a man-lift, knowing the air is full of 
those little 'noseeum' meanies!
