>Please don't kick me off your list serve ... but I have two questions:

Nope, were a polite group, ask away.

>What is damping off?

A fungal disease that results in wilting then death of young
seedlings. It is associated with damp soil. Using a
sterile starting medium and/or bottom watering help
reduce the indidence of it. If conditions are right damping
off will wipe out whole trays of seedlings.

>and how do you water from the bottom?

Hold the watering can upside down. Just kidding.
If your seed starting containers have holes on the bottom
(they should for drainage) just place them in a bowl of
warm or tepid water for a few minutes or until the surface
of your starting medium darkens slightly indicating it is
moist. If you use soil (or soilless) cubes or peat pots
just add a little water to the tray they are in.
Keep notes of what does and does not work for you,
since what works for me under the lights in my cool
basement may not work for someone else on
their windowsill.

>I am brand new to all of this.

I have been doing this "stuff" for years and what with
new understandings of soil mechanics and trying new
things I always learning something new.

Good luck with your garden. Ron Souliere
