Re: fertilizer questions

I'll start the debate from the non organic side of the square, first get a
soil test kit and test the soil. Amend as necessary to what you are planting.

I chemical fertilize, here in the mid west we have feed stores, I go to a feed
store, buy 40Lb bag of 12-12-12 for about $5.00* and apply 1/2 coffee can per
4 X 4 block in the fall after the growing season and when I clean up the block
for winter, then add another 1/2 coffee can in the spring just when I turn the
soil over for planting. If we get a lot of rain, than I may scatter a hand
full of fertilizer in mid summer. Works for me. I test the soil each spring
too, found out I need to add some potash, so I got a bag of 0-0-60 and added
per directions. Haven't tested the soil this year yet, but that's what I do.

I also add some Miracle Grow, Peter's or Super Bloom once a month when I
water. I also use the Jerry Baker tonics from time to time. This is sure to
start a debate so let me say that two years ago, I used them and liked them,
last year I didn't on a recommendation to see if they made a difference, this
year I'm going to do it faithfully and see what happens. I did notice an
increase in bugs and several roses developed black spot. We'll see.

What ever you do, organic or non organic, do it faithfully.
