I fear that I must respectfully but strongly disagree with the use of fine or
"play" sand. I made that mistake many years ago and have never been as happy
with that bed as with any of my others. This caused me to look into the matter
at length. I found that there was total agreement that, if sand is to be used,
it should be the coarse stuff ... "builders' sand"
        There is an argument among the knowledgeable as to whether sand should
be used at all ... but all  would favor coarse over fine. It seems that the
argument over sand is based on the nature of the clay that it is mixed with
.... sand plus clay can make bricks, you know, but I have used coarse sand
with my clay very successfully.
        Perhaps you should experiment a bit or consult your extension agent
... in other words "look before you leap"
