Bill--there is a small discussion of wood ash at the site below. Wood ash is listed in Mel's soil mix but I didn't put it in my garden. I didn't have access to any and have since read that wood ash is very alkaline (high in lime and potash)--so be careful. I live in the west and the soil is already very alkaline. Also, it must be pure wood ash--no other "stuff" having been burned in the fire pit. No plastics, colored paper, treated wood or artificial wood logs, etc. I don't remember where on the internet I read the article about wood ash in gardening--but it did say--be careful--highly alkaline. Maybe a little is best unless your soil is acidic. Lorri in Colorado
