I have had very good luck soaking various types of lettuce seeds. What I
have done is to spread them on a paper towel, and put another paper
towel over them. Then I spray the whole thing with water, and slide it
into a plastic bag, or sandwich it in between two sheets of plastic
wrap. Then I store it on top of the fridge, where it's warm, but not too
warm. After a few (3-7 days) the lettuce seeds start to sprout. I pick
them off with a tweezers and plant them. A little bit of paper doesn't
hurt them a bit.
I deliberately mix the lettuce seeds together and don't keep track of
them as I put them in the square, because I like the surprise of not
knowing what kinds of lettuce are going to pop up.
