Hello, We planted 3 yr old roots 3 years ago in a 4 x 10' bed. We planted 30 roots, expecting some to be less hardy than others. We were right. Some didn't. We are always amazed that anything overwinters here in our little corner of the northeast kingdom, though. Although we have no way of actually counting the numbers of roots which made it, we have about 30-40 stalks each year. Not a lot, but enough for a few nice meals. We actually began harvesting last year, even though the nursery from which we purchased the stock claimed we would be able to harvest the spring/summer season after we planted (and we planted in the fall). It does occur to us that there are probably many other more productive uses of this space, but asparagus requires room to grow in a healthy manner. So, if you're like us and love asparagus, you make a few square foot sacrificies...
