I have learned that with lettuce ( and most other "transplantable"
plants) that it pays to start them in cups and let them get fairly large
before setting them out in the garden. This makes it easier to protect
them from bugs and weather and does not take up garden space with non
producing plants. As soon as a square becomes available, you have
something to put into it that will soon be productive.
