Re: Stuck Peas, by Dave & Judy

Fellow listers from the mid-Atlantic states Judy Cosler and Dave have shared
their problems with peas that more or less refuse to grow. I'm here to tell
you that the same dang thing is happening to me. I'm just outside D.C. in
the Maryland suburbs (somewhere near Judy). Zone 7 is just weirded out this
spring! Yesterday and today (5/18 and 19) were the first genuinely hot days
of the year so far (into the 80's). This is quite atypical for the area.
We're usually short on spring, but this year it has been *cold* and *wet*
since forever!

I planted my peas April 19, which is later than I'd like. But I didn't have
much choice: it was so nasty and wet that the soil couldn't be worked
properly. They didn't come up for about 15 days either, which startled me.
I'm using 'Sugar Ann' snap peas this time out, my first attempt with the pea
genre.

Like Dave, my peas halted at the 1-inch mark for at least a solid week. We
looked at one another, but neither fertilizer nor water made any difference.

In the last few days, they've risen all the way to 4 inches tall (just about
the bottom rung on my pea fence).

Frankly, if we swing into the usual hot, muggy weather for the end of May
and early June, I don't see how this crop can mature successfully.
Theoretically, peas should have been very happy campers this spring. But
they just weren't!

Dave asked,
>>I live in Southeast PA near Philly. Do you think it's too late to try another
>>round of peas?

I think it's definitely too late for me in 7, but you should be in 6 and may
still get enough coolish weather to get to the finish line. Try
anyway--what the hey? It's not hot enough to plant beans yet!
