Re: Are You Planting Now?

I planted part of my fall crop early and am already getting results. In
fact I think my beans are picked out, we'll see if they flower some more
now that I have picked every bean on them.
I am picking tomatoes again, I have broccoli and lettuce, My sweet
potatos are in full gallop after harvesting them last month. Of course,
the peppers and NewZealand Spinach are still strong, and I am harvesting
herbs.
It seems that I am finally getting some results from the No-Till Deep
Mulch style of gardening. I can see a difference in the soil whenever I
look under some of the grass clippings. There are plenty of worms, but I
had those before from my 'Cubic Foot Composting', the main difference is
the look and feel of the soil. It looks dry, even soon after a rain, but
if you grab some up, it still makes a ball. I think what is happening is
that the water is penetrating the soil structure so that it can't be
seen from the surface. Wonderful drainage... but good moisture retention
too!
I am letting three 2X4 beds go idle, I want to move them (what a job!)
but haven't done it because of the plants in them. So as soon as I
transplant some strawberries and harvest some Habeneros, I'll do that...
maybe in time to plant a late winter crop. Then I will have room to add
some more, ending up with 8 2x4s and 4 3x6 beds. Double what I have now.
I am so glad summer is over. After this season's dismal crop I am
considering abandoning the idea of trying to grow things in the summer
at all. I get three season's growth without it, and summer is so
frustrating. For those up north, it would be like trying to grow a crop
between November and February.
