Re: Longer beds

Hello Ted,

My opinion on this is mixed. I used the 4x4 beds for years, but I'm not that
tall, so reaching into the inner squares is a challenge for my back. Now I
have a landlord who will not allow me to have squares in the garden. I *
have* to garden "like her mother did". So I've compromised. I use the square
foot planting method (16, 9, 4,1) in rows about 18 feet long and 2 feet wide,
with pathways 1 foot wide. I still mark the squares with easy-to-see twine.
My landlord is happy with the look. I am very happy with the ease of the
layout and I still produce a huge amount of veggies for canning, storing and
for giving away, interspersed with flowers, all in a relatively small garden
area.

I built 4x2 cages that are extremely easy to handle. This way I can protect
small areas of plants allowing others to be exposed when necessary. I have a
few shorter beds of only four feet, on which I use my old 4x4 frames. I have
an unusually shaped garden.

I say, use your imagination when setting up your garden. Mel suggested and
demonstrated that on his TV show. Vary the sizes of your beds for beauty and
style.

Good luck,
Lorrie (Vermont)
