Organic Humus with a little cow manure mixed in. And before someone tells me cow manure is not good for irises, I know that. However, I start with a porous rock  surface and have to build my soil completely.

 
 
Did you use bone meal or some other organic amendment in your bed preparation? If so, expect more nocturnal digging until the bed is adequately leached.
