RE: Shade irises

I have found Âfoedessima to be tough as nails in Zone 8. They will grow in dry shade, right at the base of trees. There are some that have been flourishing on my throw away pile for months. I donât know how they deal with cold though.Â

Pacific Coast species are not a good group to start with in Zone 5 Indiana, though. Other non-bulb, non-water irises that will flower in shade include cristata and foetidissima. In Zone 5 both would probably appreciate several hours of morning sun.

Pacific Coast iris flower fine for me in shade. Siberians occasionally flower. Bearded flower for a year or two whenever a few trees blow down.
