Iris brevicaulis is very distinct in all parts. The leaves tend to lay flat to the ground, and are narrow, on the order of a Siberian Iris. They are not robust like I. shrevei . They are somewhat corrugated. The rhizome is thinner and longer than typical shrevei.  I have grown this plant  for over 30 years, all collected in West Central Illinois.
