Re: Re:Iris brevicaulis Ontario

The leaves were upright. In cross section were like corrugated
cardboard, two layers of holes, heavily marked ribs. Rhizomes
narrower and longer then my versicolor or virginica, but my iris are
not grown in water. Leaves were about 2/3 wdth of versicolor, and
almost 1/2 of virginica leaves. They were in marsh land soil under
deciduous trees. Rhizomes very much looked like louisiana rhrizomes.
Rhizomes at elongated part were 3/8" across. No pdf on leaves. Not much
wider at base of fan.

May have to bloom them out to be sure. The original description gave a
precise location , and ministry described reported location when they
last checked on them about 25 years ago. They were withing a few feet
of were expected. All sunny areas of pond bank were covered in
pampas grass, these were under trees were pampas grass didn't grow.

Iris brevicaulis is very distinct in all parts. The leaves tend to lay
flat to the ground, and are narrow, on the order of a Siberian Iris.
They are not robust like I. shrevei . They are somewhat corrugated. The
rhizome is thinner and longer than typical shrevei. ÂI have grown this
plant Âfor over 30 years, all collected in West Central Illinois. I
hope this helps you Chuck!
