Chuck, All this sounds right but they still need to be  flowered to be sure. The flower stalk is about an inch or two vertical from the rhizome then horizontal. I always find them under deciduous trees in a swamp, usually on a terrace, but rarely see them flower there! It does not need to be in water to thrive.
