RE: First Bloom of the year

Jim,

You are correct.  Around south Louisiana, the Fulvas are first, followed by Giganticaerulea and Nelsonii.  Brevicaulis typically brings up the rear.  The whole cycle usually lasts 6 to 7 weeks, mid March to the end of April.

The fulva in the pics is a week to a week and a half ahead of every other fulva in my yard.

It’s amazing how 50 miles can make a pretty significant difference in bloom time.  The fulvas south of I-10 near White Castle will bloom 1 to 2 weeks earlier than the fulvas north of LA 90 around Lottie.

I guess microclimates in my yard can imitate nature and I think that explains why this iris is so early.  It could also be that this plant is “fed” all year long by my sewer plant effluent.

Dollarweed, Pennywort and hydrocotyle are all one in the same.  Dollar weed is a southern thing!

Regards,
Buddy Manuel

I. fulva.  This one’s awful early this year.  All other Louisianas in my yard are at least two weeks away.

This is in my front ditch.  I’m not really that good of a grower of $ weed!!

Hey Buddy it's nice to see fulva already, it must be in a happy spot in the ditch.

Doesn't fulva flower earlier then most hybrids or indeed any of the other species of LA's?

I've never heard of Dollar Weed, I take it you are referring to the hydrocotyle?

That's the interesting thing about common names, they are only common locally.
