Instar = growth stages of the larvae. Most insects have five instars. Consider it something like shedding skin like a snake.
The fifth instar of the borer is really quite large. Hard to believe it forms as small a pupae as it does.
I've been harvesting the pupae in hopes of getting a very good photo of the moth.

I burn the foliage each spring as well. I do cut foliage in the late fall too.
