I sure can sympathize with all of you that have animal problems. I for one
have cat problems. The dog problems are very minimal as we have a good
leash law in our area however, nothing is said about cats and they really
are my headache. My dogs, the spoiled little darlings that they are would
never go near my beds, course I just wouldn't let that happen. My big boy
Sherman lays in front of the French doors and tells me when one cat puts its
paw on our side of the yard, Its "get rid of that cat time"!!!! I've tried
several things to deter the cats and here is some of them that just may help
others:
1. Mix 1 Tab of Cayenne powder with 2 tab of Coleman's mustard and 3 Tab
of flour in a bag, sprinkle (the flour is to let you know where you've
sprinkled). I've tried this but it just didn't do anything for me.
2.	Mouse traps with a small block of wood glued down so the snapper part
can't come down completely, there are times I wished these were rat traps.
3.	Moth balls, we use to use them to deter bear from our cabin
4. the latest is from Gardener's Supply and are plastic spike like
material (they say it will not hurt them) and you merely cut the shape or
amount you want and put it down. I'm trying it and so far it has worked,
course with five cats to chase out I may own the company before long.
5. In talking to my friend the animal Control officer it seems that a lot
of people out there are not responsible animal owners, she claims that dog
owners are more responsible because most of them will try to find their dog
and will rescue it from the shelter while cat owners very seldom do. She
also said that a lot more dogs are altered then cats. She has the policy of
not pitting neighbor against neighbor but just give her a call and she'll
come out and in a friendly manner talk to the people, the caller's name is
never mentioned.

I don't know what the solution really is but to educate, educate, educate,
we have one foundation in our area that if someone has a pet that needs to
be altered and they don't have the funds to do it, all it takes is to make a
call to the foundation and 95% of the time they will furnish the funds. I
bet there are a lot more of these types of foundations, organizations that
would be willing to help if one would seek them out.

Even though this "band box" speech is not about iris, it does impact greatly
on my darling plants which as of this morning were hopefully resting under
an inch of snow that we got last night. I'd moan and groan a lot but in
Montana one never has enough moisture and this past winter was
exceptionally dry.
Wishing everyone going to the convention a great trip and I'll be awaiting
the reports in the digest. Caroline Hudnall
