Hi folks: This'll be a long one! I'm writing from my
daughter's place since my hard drive has crashed and I
am suffering computer withdrawal! But things need to
be said.
#1. re: the plastic knife labels. I use old
mini-blind slats and while they will break off,
especially when mowed, they are more flexible than the
knives. And nothing is cheaper. Friends are always
passing on their old blinds. Just an idea to pass
along.
#2 re: buckets over plants. I remember, when I had
only a few plants in San Antonio, going out when a
late cold snap was on the way and covering TB stalks
with empty garbage cans! It worked, as long as no
wind.
#3 re: Shows. The Iris Society of Austin had their
show last Sunday and one of my ISA buddies, who is a
silent iris-talk participant suggested that I tell
about it. I don't know if it's 'cause he's shy or
because he had the runner-up bloom! Anyway, Rita
Snyder of the Rainbow Iris Farms won Queen of Show
with a massive stalk of Jesse's Song and Jim Landers
of Temple, TX took second with Tasco's Ruffled Goddess
which was gorgeous. The Snyder's took the silver
medal and Judi and Keith Sharp took the bronze. (I
*have* to boast about last year though, when Jim won
Queen of the Show and bronze medal and I won silver
medal! Jim went on to win Queen at the Nat'l
convention, too. He just had a real good year!)
#4 My own garden. Won best of section with Rustler
and Boy Next Door. Six blues and 3 seconds. Can't
remember all of them. At present I have Competitive
Edge, Boxwinks Lemon Tree, Hello Darkness, Kekionga,
Mesmerizer, Altruist, Los Banos, Rose 'N Gold,
America's Song, Buttermilk Blush, Citrus Mistress,
Classy Chassy, Royal Elegance, Royal Crusader, Celtic
Prince, Lightning Bolt, Tanzanian Tangerine, Batik,
Titan's Glory, Olympiad, Red Rider, Orange Popsicle,
Lillypilly Wine, In Town, Vanity's Child, Tea Leaves,
and a few others that I can't remember in bloom. LA's
are starting with Ice Angel, Colorific, Dazzling
Waters, Bayou Short Stuff and lots of buds coming on.
Swamp Pioneers has been blooming for more than a week.
All the unusual rain this Spring has done the plants
good. And made for an absolutely *spectacular*
wildflower show along the central Texas roadsides.
Sorry for the length of this but stuff has been
backing up.
Carol, where it was 83 and sunny this afternoon but
now looks as if a thunderstorm is blowing up. Zone 8
