From training I received from Dr. Roy Epperson, this
should indeed be marked down at a show. On the show bench,
what is exhibited should be typical of the cultivar. If it
is not "supposed" to have horns (per the R&I), then it
should be penalized, regardless of how nice a stalk it is
otherwise. (Of course, this assumes that the judges are
familiar enough with it to know it's not supposed to have
horns...)
I have seen nice stalks of THORNBIRD and CONJURATION get
points off for missing horns, or a mix of horns and
flounces.
I have CC, although it didn't bloom last year. I will
let everyone know if I get the version with the "extra
features."
I am sending a copy of this to Joan Roberts, who
introduced CC. Maybe we'll get some feedback.
