Bloom season: with a whimper

The season looks like it will be rather disappointing in my garden. We have
had about a week of 90-degree temperatures, incluidng a high one day of 99,
and no meaningful rain (showers have hit all around us, but not spot on).

SDBs are about bloomed out after a 10-day season. IBs are blooming at SDB
heights, and the flowers are melting after a day and a half.

TBs will be poor. This spring a survey of the beds showed many central fans
with increase; those can usually be counted on to bloom. After our dry, and
now very hot, spring following on the dry winter (and let's not forget those
two late hard freezes) it appears that 60-80% of those have aborted and will
not produce stalks. Most of the few stalks that have appeared so far are
weak-looking. I've been watering, but it obviously wasn't enough.

What might salvage the season for me is a bed of new things from Keppel.
They are coming on later than the other material (just planted last fall)
and it appears nearly all will bloom--the buds were probably set in Keith's
garden.

Early examination does show good bloom possible on Louisianas, and the
spuria clumps look healthy. Siberians and Japanese? Forget it. Six years
of drought have caused them to forget even what a bloomstalk looks like.

We have been warned, after the prolonged drought, to watch our well, so what
irrigation we can do is very limited.

Hoping for rain this weekend, but probably another false alarm.

Bummer. Maybe next year....
