As of April 11th, he daily varietal count has remained stable at around 150 for
almost three weeks now :
Aril bloom (now over) was scant this year.
No arilbredmedians bloomed at their normal time, but there were a few latecomers
(last one just opened).
Near-arils put on their best show ever (a handful are still blooming).
Halfbred bloom was fairly typical (now well past peak).
The quarterbreds put on a spectacular show (now well past peak).
One border bearded, FAUX PAS, and one rebloomer, CATCHY NAME, bloomed.
CHAPEAU bloomed and CAHOKIA has a bud, but nothing else looks promising in the
TBs.
Maiden bloom of first-generation halfbreds was exciting, but "awesome" better
describes the maiden bloom of the first seedlings from my crosses of a
first-generation halfbred with conventional halfbreds. "Grandfather" was CHINESE
EMPRESS (Blyth, 1988) and "grandmother" was one of the Holden tetraploid
seedlings. Typical seedlings were much better than the average halfbred
seedling in form and I was quite pleased with the range of colors and patterns
that showed up.
Details would, of course, exceed space limitations -- so I'll sign off before I
get kicked off the list completely!
