Good statement by Chris Hollinshead. Responsible use is the
key--"preventative spraying" when nary a borer has been detected in the
garden previously is not, in my opinion, responsible.
I also performed a super clean-up last year and this spring, after a big
siege of borers. So far this year, no borers at all. I am convinced that
for the average gardener, with a small collection of irises, spraying for
borers is not needed if clean-up is thorough and vigiliance is exercised
when the borers are likely to be small and detectable. Those with acres of
iris or commercial growers in bad borer areas may have to act
differently--and I hope responsibly.
