I use graph paper and get a second person (grandson or hubby are usually
willing), to go to the beds with me to measure. We measure the longest two
areas (width and length), and a couple other widths if the bed is an
irregular shape. Then to the graph paper. I am no mathmetician but I can get
a pretty workable scale to use on the paper. I draw with a very light art
pencil (keeping a good soft eraser handy) until it suits me. I then place
letters A-Z and if I have more than 26 plants in the bed, I start using
letters to mark the location of each plant in the bed. This usually requires
a lot of running back and forth to the bed but I need the exercise
anyway...A key is made for the letters; A=Poetry in Motion Iris TB
B=Queen in Callico Iris TB
what ever other info about the plant can be added as you see fit.
Hybridizer, where you got it date it was planted.....
I do this for all my beds and all my plants. These maps are life savers. I
use them often...Now that I have read how others scan an outline of a bed to
the computer, I am excited about trying to do all mine that way now. I have
master lists of all plants and info about each one that I did in Microsoft
Word and that comes in handy too . When I meet with a new found iris,
daylily, or whatever lover. I take my list with me and we can quickly see if
there are any on my list that are on the friends wish list and vice
versa...Trades are worked out easily this way. LOTS of work being a good
gardener, isn't it.
