Rita asked how we map and mark our Guest iris.
We are presently receiving iris for our Region 13 2005 spring meeting
and this is what I am doing because it has worked very well for me in my
own iris beds.
1. As I receive rhizomes I record them by grower in an old fashioned
shorthand pad which has hard covers front and back, will hold a pencil
in the top spiral and which is lined. (I record them by
grower/hybridizer/submitter and try to plant them in that order.)
2. Determine the direction the planted rows will go. Write it at the
top of the list on the shorthand pad.
3. Determine which end of the row will be the one will be the starting
end.
4. As iris are planted insert the identifying tag in the proper spot
for that iris.
5. Record the location of the iris on the pad as you plant. If rows
run north to south and the starting end is the north end the first iris
in that row would be identified as R1-1 and that is written beside the
name of the iris on the shorthand pad The next iris planted in row one
would be identified as R1-2.
When the subsequent rows are planted the row number would change to
reflect the proper row.
6. When each planting is completed walk the rows and double check that
the numbers on the pad are correct.
Using this method to record my own iris over the years I found data can
easily be recorded on computer programs such as word or a spread sheet
or drawn manually on a map. I use the computer so I print out a list
when I want to record which iris need dividing, which need new labels
or which ones died. I also use it to record bloom and other
information pertaining to an individual iris.
Our club bylaws require that members keep a record of the iris which
were purchased as a club and distributed to members as club guests for
their gardens.
I found the method I use has worked very well for that purpose.
If you wish to transfer the data you recorded to another program to be
alpha sorted be sure to record the location number after the name to
make the set up easier for sorting. I also keep a copy on a floppy disk
or hard disk which can be shared with others.
