Anner, actually Kew did cross my mind.....I didn't think of the disruption the
WW II had on England. Its effect on us wasn't minor, but not a fraction as
disruptive as it was on England, particularly in the SE.
Historically, the freedom to assume the responsibility and with a more-or-less
intact society in general, the AIS in particular, certainly made our assuming
the Registration responsibility a most reasonable choice. As the majority of
iris breeding and introduction was going on here at that time, and still is,
the delegation to the AIS put the registration process closest to the dominant
users. The European Union may catch up with us in time.
I get the impression that there has been some very careful, patient and
cautious work to get the Japanese breeders on board with our process, as they
have about a three hundred year seniority to our comparative youth in working
with irises. It appears there has been some apparent resistance to
acknowledging the American society as having jurisdiction over their
nomenclature. Having lived among Japanese families much of my life, I have
some sympathy with how they probably feel.
