Re: AIS: REF: AIS as International Registration Authority

John Reeds, I agree with you regarding the hybridizer supplying the photo. The hybridizer supplies the descriptive information based upon how it blooms in their garden. Likewise, they should supply the image/picture/slide.

If AIS requests images for registration then a clear policy should be written regarding the use of the images. If registrants are supplying images for the purpose of registration, then those images should only be used for registration purposes. The use of images might include inclusion in the registration database, AIS online database of registrations, and any possible electronic checklist (CD, DVD, etc.).

In regard to size and format of images perhaps there should only be a minimum size requirement, something like no images below 300 pixels wide. A maximum limit need not be set nor file type. I believe this because many image programs like Fireworks and PhotoShop can batch process 1,000 images in literally just a few minutes to include resizing based on file size or image size, and also convert images from one format to another (such as BMP's, TIFF's, JPG's, etc), as well as many other options. If JPG is the format selected for the database, then these other formats can quickly and easily be converted.

I would hate to have someone else pick "the official
representative" picture of my flower. I would rather the hybridizer supply a
photo. The size of the photo and the flower could be standardized as passport
photos are, for uniformity.
