RE: AIS: REF: AIS as International Registration Authority

Well, I guess it is time for me to chime in with my 2c worth.

IMHO, I think this is a good idea. I think having pictures with our
registrations will be a huge benefit. While it might not be able to tell
the difference between Holy Night and Eleanor Roosevelt, in many cases I
think it might tell us that the iris we have growing in our yard is
misnamed. So many things are unclear in even the best description that a
picture could answer a lot of questions. You might not be able to verify
the exact shade of blue of a cultivar but you can tell whether that cultivar
had yellow haft markings, which might have been left out of the description.
For those of us that are visually oriented, we can not always picture what
the best word description is trying to tell us, whereas a simple picture
could explain a lot.

When it comes to collection of images with registration I have heard maybe
one response that it might be a good idea. Mostly I have heard numerous
problems, of which I am already aware. It seems to me we should not expect
to identify a plant because we now have a photo. We cant identify plants
with a text description so does that mean we shouldnt have registrations?
People are consistently trying to identify plants on Iris photos. Does this
mean we should discard that forum? To me whether it is desirable to have
photos with registration is the primary question. Technology continues to
change so how the images are stored and for how long will have different
answers as the process begins and continues. I think we will do the best we
can with what we have. But without a number of people saying, Yes I would
like to see pictures than nothing will ever be done and all the discussion
of how to use, store, etc. will be moot. Unfortunately I have not been
encouraged by the respon!
