Chris,
I know that you understand this, but the way that you state it may
mislead some.
Your descriptions are correct if the camera-object distance is changed
to maintain the same image size on the film. But it is the camera-object
distance that determines the flatness or distorted 3D effect, not the
focal length of the lens.
