I also water in the evenings.  And I water everything,
not just Iris in the evenings.  I cannot water in the
mornings, since I have to be at work at 8:00 am. but I
found that when I lived in Denver and was on very
restricted watering, that an evening watering allowed
the plants to take up the moisture fully, whereas
watering in the morning (which I have done on weekends
in very hot weather here in Missouri)doesn't seem to
help much.  By the time the sun is high in the sky the
ground is dried out again.  I'll take my chances with
powdery mildew and slugs and rot (though I rarely have
rot) and utilitze the water to its highest potential. 
I don't feel that watering has a real value to plants
in the first place.  It only keeps them "alive",
whereas rain assists their growth in so many ways.
