These are a few observations regarding the plicata pattern. Keith
Keppel needs to be answering this question as I am no expert.
Standard pattern - stitching around standards and falls on a white
ground as in SWERTII (1612) and MADAME CHEREAU (1844). SWERTII is the
curly one and MC is tailored. The color may expand somewhat in
STEPPING OUT and RARE TREAT. It may also narrow as in NEW TOMORROW
or ASCII ART, with just a hint of peppering .
Fancy pattern - all over markings on a darker ground as in JOSEPH'S
MANTLE or the updated TEST PATTERN. All over fall pattern of
violet/purple on white ground as in PURPLE PEPPER. The falls in
JITTERBUG.
Variegata or bi-color fancy - CARAMBA or JITTERBUG. Yellow standards
with brownish/reddish markings on cream or yellow ground. BROADWAY
has a whitish ground. So does OFF BROADWAY.
Bi-color standard - Bluish markings on standards and purplish
markings on falls with white grounds as in ON EDGE or JIGSAW. Might
also be called bi-color banded or neglecta.
Amoena plicata - white standards with no markings and falls with
coloring narrow or wide. ETCHED AMOENA or SCRIMSHAW.
Washed - patterning appears to be brushed on as in many Keppel things
including CASBAH. WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS and GARNET ETCHING
have a brushing of stipples extending from the hafts with a random
scattering of dotting elsewhere. CASBAH
Banded - a solid banding of color appears on light or darker ground
with heavy concentration of dots or random dotting as in STAR SURGE
or STEPPING OUT, GOING MY WAY.
Striped/veined - Some of these may not be plicatas at all. I
question CIRCUS STRIPES (out of a zonal plus seedling) but agree on
AUTUMN CIRCUS and DOUBLE SHOT.
Reverse - heavier dotting on standards than on falls. TOP STITCH.
(more examples needed).
SURRENDER - just a scattering of dots from the hafts on a yellow
ground fading to white at the bottom with just a few dots or none at
all. This is a one cultivar class as far as I know.
Combinations - Keith Keppel has mxed them up - fancy, washed, bi-
colors.
