HYB: seedlings in cold frame (was pod setting? (was HIST:Time categories)

Well, that's a relief to know you were thinking about pods on daylilies
& I didn't miss learning something. I am also very much in the hit or
miss experimental stages here too, unfortunately most are miss's, not
hits.

Where do you garden in NC? Unless it's the mountains in the western
part of the state, I would think a cold frame for iris seedlings would
do great where you are. I am sure these babies were frozen last week (&
a few are limp and falling over), but I'm sure most of the ones that
would be able to live as adults here can take a little bit of frost. I
admit I was worried about them & was pleasantly surprised to see them
looking as good as they do this morning. It did get cold enough inside
the frame to frost heave one or two of the most recent ones I put in
last week (not old enough to have as many roots)..

The plant bed cover material that is on the cold frame is a thin one
designed for tobacco seedling beds, available from the local farmers'
Co-Op & fairly inexpensive. It says on the package that it is for
insect protection & isn't designed to protect plants from freezing. It
suggests using plastic for freeze protection, but I've found it works
great for plants that can stand some frost (irises, spinach, lettuce).
They make special nursery bed material that will protect tender plants
from freezes into the 20s using only a single layer, but I just use
double or triple layers of what I have.

<I am still in the hit and miss experimental stages here. ......My
husband is still telling me I am wasting my
time thinking of trying to use or depend on a cold frame in our
climate...I
don't agree with him. We are z7/8 here. Donna NCz7/8>
