Re: HYB: seedling survival (data)

Of about 112 different crosses from 2002 thru 2004 that have produced at
least one seedling that survived transplanting to the so-called garden,
there was no correlation between number of seeds produced and number of
survivors. Percent survival fell in about the same range, independent
of how many seeds I started with.

So, Betty, keep those pod parents as happy as possible - more seeds =
more survivors! And more that die....

The number of survivors will change a little this year when late
germinants from last year and new, delayed germinants from this year
will be added.

2002, '02, and '04 average number of survivors per cross and (maximum,
minimum) was 6.0 (19, 1), 5.4 (17, 1) , 5.8 (32, 1).

Average percent survival was 20%, 16%, and 12%. Less than 10 percent of
47 crosses survived, 10 to 20% survived in 32 crosses, and 20 to 60%
survived in the remainder (except for one pod with 5 seeds and 6
survivors <G>).

Could be a lot of reasons for steadily decreasing average percent
survival over time (r2 = 1!).... Possible explanations..... Random ?
The rate may go up as delayed germinants for 2003 & 4 are added <if>
delayed germinants have higher survival rates? Better success rates
using ever sicker parents as time goes on? Year to year weather
differences? Ever changing techniques? All of the above?

Number of crosses with 5 or more survivors - 17, 11, 17. With 10 or
more - 7, 6, 7

In the group with 10 or more survivors, 2 are seedling x seedling (30
and 12 survivors), 9 are seedling x non-seedling (4 with modern pollen
parent).

The crosses with more than 10 surviving seedlings involving a recently
introduced (90s or newer) parent:
seedling: (IMMORTALITY x CELEBRATION SONG) X ABOUT TOWN, 32 survivors
PINK FORMAL x CELEBRATION SONG, 18 survivors
SEAKIST X sib to above seedling, 17 survivors
ART DECO X seedling: (SIGN OF LEO x bee), 17
ART DECO X STUNNING SERENADE, 16
ABBEY ROAD X GILDED CREAM, 27
SWINGTOWN X RINGO, 10
seedling: (DUSKY CHALLENGER x GRAPE ICE) X TWILIGHT FANCIES, 19
