The capabilities of the search functions varies. I've used a lot of forums other that plant related ones. The Greenbuilding forum is a great hangout. Some are very basic. Other give you control over a range of terms and parameters. Most give you Boolean functions for keywords. And dates and author is very common. And let you limit search to certain topical rooms. to look only within Subject and/or body of posts. etc etc

And trying to go thru the hoops that yahoogroups used to have was not fun. Hortnet was. I never went to Daves group or the other one, tho I have used their search thingies. I had forgotten that they have that. Can/could you look at posts by date or author as well as key words in other groups?
