I grow a number of versicolors in ordinary border conditions. They seem to
thrive, when the voles don't get them. Same for virginica and the xrobusta
hybrids. The soil is richly organic and usually moist.
I've also naturalized some around the campus pond, where they are now under
about 6-7" of water. Later, in the summer, they will be just on the edge
of the water. Happy there, they have self-seeded in other spots around the
pond.
