Laureen,
Chromosomes are the structures that contain the genes. A plant with 2 sets
of chromosomes is called a Diploid and if it has 4 sets, it is called a
Tetraploid.
I know the plants tend to be larger, I do not know much else about the
causes or effects.
I'm sure someone else will tell you more.
