  First of all, some history. I've been attending AIS board meetings for a
  few years, and I am still amazed at what John Jones has done. The board
  is, basically, very conservative. That is certainly not a bad thing, but
  it makes new ideas difficult to sell. John has made the on-line
  registrations a possibility, and he has organized the team effort to get
  the (ongoing) work done.

  Is the current product perfect? Of course not. Are many further
  enhancements coming? Certainly. Do those of us who want to maximize
  openness of the data need to make our opinions known to the AIS board?

  The current discussion could not even be taking place if it were not for
  the original scanning/OCRing by Mike Lowe, and the proofing/organizing
  by John and his team of volunteers. We owe them a great debt of
  gratitude. 

  John and I have discussed these issues before. He has significant valid
  concerns. 

  Online and CD versions of the data could lead to large numbers of unsold
  R&I's or Checklists, as we move from hard-copy to electronic data (John
  had this as a consideration a fair while ago--not recently, but it is
  still something to consider).

  (To me) much more significant: version control. If the only source of
  the data is the on-line DB, few problems can arise. This is not the only
  way I want the data to be available, but I do see the advantages.
  Changes are immediately and uniformly applied. But those who use the
  books are behind those who use the electronic data. So nothing is
  perfect. Sigh.

  Let's continue to talk it up. John will support any reasonable proposal.
