Re: HYB: iris seeds

The first podful I washed and set them, still moist and covered, in
the freezer. The second I also washed but dried; they are now
sitting in the clear plastic cups I'm using as containers. My
impulse is to put them, dry and covered, in the refrigerator until
cold enough to plant them out in my rough cold frame.

Patricia,

Why did you put them in the freezer? As far as I know you should never
freeze seed as this is sure to kill them (unless they're an alpine type
that may be dormant in permafrost or something like that). Most seed even
in cold areas don't actually freeze as the ground itself doesn't freeze
(obviously as I said above there are areas that do).

Have I been told the wrong thing? I always thought that for storage and
stratification purposes you refridgerate not freeze?

Anyone else know for sure?

Cheers.
