Judges are required to vote the Awards Ballot but are not required
to vote the Symposium.
There used to be a Judges' Choice ballot along with the
Symposium ballot. I remember voting both when I first became a
judge. An iris had to be in commerce two years to be voted a JC
award (the same eligibility as for the Awards Ballot with bearded
irises). The JC was phased out shortly after I became a judge. I
think it was considered useless duplication. If you vote an Awards
ballot, that is a judge expressing a choice, so why do the same
thing twice.? The judges, through the Awards Ballot, are in effect
selecting what goes on the Symposium Ballot, so the preselection
by judges idea is already in operation.
