The judges get to vote for HM's and AM's and the medals, but all AIS
members get to vote for the favorite 100 TB's, the Symposium.

A regional symposium is a great idea. I have suggested it more than
once. Of course, I got flack for opining that folks in Arizona don't
care what does well in Maine, and vice versa, but I'm used to flack.

In one sense I agree wholeheartedly, but if you want to be sure no one
will run for RVP, get something like this passed by the AIS board.
Write-ins are a LOT LOT LOT of work to tabulate.

"I feel your pain." I want the Symposium list to be useful as a guide
for buying iris. It falls short, at the very least because it represents
some sort of mish-mash of climates and population distrubutions.
Regional subtotals of the Symposium are better, but still the choice is
from among a group that includes many that grow well only elsewhere, and
excludes some that did not win awards because they do not grow well in
the "judge-heavy" regions.

This is a problem. A real one. Your suggestions, even if I think them
impractical, are welcome. I am not the final judge, and together we may
come up with a Symposium better than the current one.

That is my goal, as it is yours.

Regional awards? Regional Symposia? Maybe. Not an easy problem.
