If the primary purpose of the Symposium is to acurately reflect the
popularity of iries within the membership of the American Iris Society then
the current procedures are in conflict with that mission.
The popularity poll should be a distinct program completely removed for the
garden judges involvement.
The popularity poll should acurately reflect the true popularity of iries by
Region and then those results should be combined for a National popularity
comperision.
All votes should be write-ins only to ensure that these are the popular
irises being grown by the membership.
Iris should not be limited to Tall Bearded types only since this not reflect
the true growing patterns and popularity of the various regions.
AIS should establish a Popularity Poll Chairman.
Each RVP should select a Popularity Poll tabulator within each region (I
would volunteer with Region 4, but I am sure many others would also
volunteer with Region 4).
A tear off ballet could be included in one issue of the Iris Bulletin.
Regional newsletters would also include a ballot. Regional websites could
allow for members to vote via email or electronic ballot with results going
to the Regional Tabulator. Even clubs could make a ballet collection part
of their meetings.
An award could be given to each Regional Popularity Poll winner as well as
to the top winner after all Regional votes are tallied together.
The current Symposium procedures are political and also influenced by
commercial input. (my personal opinion)
The current Syposium procedures procdures do reflect the true popularity of
particular irises.
Small Regional hybridizers are totally being oppressed by the current
Symposium procedures.
Doing what is right should be easy and will be accepted by the membership.
Continuing the fallacy of a popularity poll as the Symposium is currently
established does not reflect well on the AIS Board and AIS in general since
it clearly is not operating to achieve the mandate of the Symposium.
Remove the political nature of the Symposium and operate it as a true
popularity poll of irises and this will be a benefit to the Society.
Respectfully,
