<So do I stick the ripe seeds in the fridge 'til spring or plant them
now and hope for the best? Pat Mitchell in cold winters>
Pat, most folks would say let them dry at room conditions for a few
weeks (in an open paper cup, envelope, etc) then store them at room
conditions (somewhere you are less likely to dump them all out on the
floor! <g>) until you are ready to plant them outdoors this fall. I
can't tell you when that should be in your location (especially since
I've already forgotten where that is), but I'd say a month before the
ground freezes. In other words, after temperatures have cooled off for
good, but before the soil freezes for the winter (i.e., while you can
still plant them). Maybe that would be mid- October for you? Maybe
somebody in your climate will post to help you figure out when to plant
them outdoors.
Definitely don't store them fresh in the fridge unless you are going to
try to short-circuit their dormancy and germinate them early.
You will have to decide for yourself whether or not you want to try to
break seed dormancy early and coddle seedlings over the winter (more of
a gamble) or go the more tried and true route of drying, storing, fall
planting, and spring germination. Since this is your first time, I'd
recommend doing the latter..
