"Anyone have an exercise for learning patience? ;-)"--Betty W. in
South-central KY Zone 6
Yes, there are a few useful and helpful exercises of mind and spirit that
help one learn patience.
One is simply to sigh deeply.
It helps to pray for the gift of acceptance also
When things go awry, or become difficult, I have to step back and look at
the larger picture of things. One of the tools I use is a prayer, written
by Rheinhold Niebuhr, I believe, which has been modified like this:
"God, grant me the patience to accept those things I cannot change,
Courage to change those I can,
and the Wisdom to know the difference......"
There is a whole lot more to that prayer, but it is one I've tucked away and
use rather often, or at least INTEND to use. I often fail.
Particularly in the iris patch--my place is an utter disaster. Three years
of neglect has caught up with me, and we've had, unlike you, an astounding
amount of rain. TD Cindy dropped about three inches here too, just like
with Linda's place in Eastern TN, and the air is full of moisture, so
thunderstorms keep happening. My beds are a sea of mud.
Now, I'm going to be back in surgery (I think) *again*, the week of July
17th to take care of a blocking carotid artery. Not fun! IThis also says I
have to do a lot of learning patience/serenity/acceptance over the
consequences too. I won't be doing much gardening for much of the rest of
the summer. --At least, not strenuous weeding!
Oh how I wish I had a strong back/weak mind 15-year-old who would work for
irises!
