Well, I can pass along what I was taught... that is that bearded irises go
through a dormancy period about 1 month after bloom....and that this is the
best time to divide.
So, therefore... since our irises peaked about the 3rd week of June, and our
sale is the end of July... I will be digging in about two weeks. And, when
I dig for our sale, I - naturally - will be discarding the soft and the puny
- cutting back all leaves to about 6 inches (with that perky little point in
the middle)... cleaning and labeling correctly, and putting all question mark
irises into the 'orphan' heap for people to make up grab bags (3 for $1!).
And.... if the planets align... before I replant, I will dig some yummy
compost into the soil and some alfalpha pellets too (Rosalie, I love you to
death!)... and maybe a dusting of bone meal.
