RE: Cult-water

Colleen,

Water and sewer costs are combined here, and it runs me about US$400 a year.
However, I live in a townhouse, with a postage stamp yard (or as listed on
the deed, 0.04 acre more or less). Outdoor watering makes up a fairly small
portion of the bill. Water rates are higher during the warm weather months.

However, the cost to my parents in Massachusetts is just the cost of
electricity to pump the water from the well. They have about 5 acres, but
only a small portion of that is watered during the year, mainly the small
gardens in the front of the house, when it is needed.

When I was living in Oakham, Massachusetts, watering costs were the same as
my parents--just the electricity to run the pump--with an eye to the water
level in the well. It was too long ago when I lived elsewhere to really
remember what the town water costs were, but they probably did run a few
hundred dollars a year, with no where near the area the Arizona man
mentioned to you, and no flood irrigation, simply a hose that was (is) used
to spray the water over an area, or left slowly running to soak an area.

As others may mention to you, water pricing and sourcing is a very political
issue, especially in the western parts of the country. From what I
understand, there is a constant battle about who is entitled to what water
and how much of that water they should be allowed to use. Pricing is
usually set by governmental or quasi-governmental units, based on factors
other than the true cost of the water.

Hi

Just returned from Perth (where it was nice and warm) to very cold South
Aust. On the way to the airport, I was travelling with a nice man from
Arizona and we got to discussing gardens and water supply. I was stunned
when he told me that he only paid $100 p.a. to flood irrigate his one and a
half acres, once a week in summer and once a month in winter. Yes, the
aquifers were dropping, yes, there was a salinity problem, but that was all
they paid for water, so no-one put in micro-irrigation systems. He said that
all the irrigation(crop and home) was flood irrigation. Is this a common
situation in other parts of the USA? In Aust most people on town supply
would pay about $350 a quarter for water and if they had a large garden,
then also about $500-$1000 in excess water as well. Water conservation is
heavily promoted here. We are fortunate that we have a bore, albeit a bit
salty so we can't overuse it.

Just curious about how others manage water supply
